Free Printable Butterfly Silhouette Template
Butterflies are a real favorite crafting theme for me and so I could not resist coming up with something on this for the Halloween season.
This page provides you with a free printable design for a large butterfly silhouette in black and white. As you'll see, the design is a half butterfly and that is so I could make this as big as possible to print across a standard letter size or A4 sheet.
The half design is super easy to use once transformed into a template (how to listed on the page) where you can simply flip the template over to complete this beautiful winged insect.

If you flip the design onto its side, you can also use this to make a butterfly profile where you only see one or mostly one of the wings from the side view. It gives you lots of choices anyway.

How to Print and Use the Half Butterfly Template
Updated October 2026: printing and project tips added by the Just Halloween Crafts team.
- Open the full-size image and save it to your computer or phone before printing, so you print the large version rather than the smaller preview.
- Choose "fit to page" in your printer settings. The design fills a standard letter or A4 sheet. To make a smaller butterfly, set the print scale to 50 or 75 percent.
- Print on card if you can. Thin card or cardstock makes a sturdier template that you can trace around again and again.
- Make a full butterfly. Fold a sheet of card or paper in half. Line up the straight body edge of the template with the fold, trace around it and cut through both layers. When you open it out, you have a complete, symmetrical butterfly.
Halloween Ideas for the Butterfly Silhouette
- Cut a swarm of black butterflies or moths from card and fix them to a wall or mirror with removable adhesive putty for a gothic display.
- Tape black paper butterflies to a window so they show up as silhouettes when the room is lit at night.
- Use the template to cut felt butterflies, as in this hanging felt butterfly decoration.
- Trace it onto a painted pumpkin or a plain cushion cover as a guide for paint or fabric pens.
